How to Become Gas Safe Registered
Published 7 October 2026 · Propvio Guides
In the UK, anyone carrying out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register. Working without registration is a criminal offence. This guide outlines the route to registration.
Prove Your Competence First
Registration depends on holding a recognised gas qualification for each type of work you do. Most engineers qualify through an apprenticeship or a recognised training route, then pass assessments under the Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS).
ACS assessments cover specific work categories, such as domestic boilers, cookers or gas fires. They must be renewed every five years.
Register a Business and Its Engineers
Registration is held by a business, which then adds each qualified engineer. A sole trader registers as a business with one engineer.
There is a registration fee, renewed every year. Gas Safe Register can inspect a sample of each engineer's work.
Your Gas Safe ID Card
Each registered engineer receives an ID card showing their licence number and the categories of work they are qualified for. Customers are told to ask to see it.
Homeowners are increasingly told how to check this. Our page How to Check a Tradesperson’s Registration explains it from their side.
Notifying Installations
When you install a new boiler or other notifiable appliance, you must notify it through Gas Safe Register. The customer then receives a Building Regulations compliance certificate.
Missing notifications cause problems for customers years later, when they sell.
