How to Become MCS Certified

Published 7 October 2026 · Propvio Guides

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certifies installers of heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage and other small-scale renewable technologies. Customers usually need an MCS-certified installer to access government grants and export payments.

Why MCS Matters to Customers

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme only funds heat pumps fitted by MCS-certified installers. Solar customers need an MCS certificate to receive payments for exported electricity under the Smart Export Guarantee.

Without certification, you are excluded from much of the domestic market for these technologies.

Apply Through a Certification Body

MCS certification is issued through an MCS-accredited certification body, not by MCS directly. The certification body assesses your business against the MCS standards for each technology you install.

You are certified per technology, so a solar installer who adds heat pumps needs a further assessment.

What You Need in Place

  • Staff with the right technical competence for each technology.
  • A quality management system covering design, installation and handover.
  • Membership of a consumer code approved for this sector.
  • Use of MCS-certified products for each installation.

Installation Paperwork

Each installation is registered, and the customer receives an MCS certificate. They will need it for grants, export payments and when they sell.

MCS on Your Propvio Profile

You can add MCS certification to your profile as an accreditation for Propvio to review. Customers who log an installation can tag you, so the job appears on your confirmed record.
