How to Join a Competent Person Scheme as an Electrician

Published 7 October 2026 · Propvio Guides

Registering with a competent person scheme lets an electrician self-certify notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. Without it, each notifiable job must go through building control. This guide outlines the process.

Choose a Scheme

The best-known schemes for domestic electrical work include NICEIC and NAPIT. Each offers categories for domestic installers and for wider contracting work.

Compare fees, assessment requirements and the support each offers before applying.

The Qualified Supervisor Requirement

Schemes require a named qualified supervisor who takes technical responsibility for the work. This person usually needs a current wiring regulations qualification and an inspection and testing qualification.

For a sole trader, the qualified supervisor is usually you.

The Assessment

  • An assessor visits to review a sample of your recent work.
  • They check your certificates, test results and paperwork.
  • They confirm your test instruments are calibrated.
  • You will be reassessed regularly, usually every year.

After You Join

You can notify notifiable work through your scheme, which issues the Building Regulations compliance certificate to the customer. Customers can find you on the scheme's own register.

Homeowners are told to ask for this certificate. How to Find a Trustworthy Electrician in the UK shows what they are looking for.

Adding Your Scheme to Propvio

NICEIC or NAPIT registration is one of the accreditations Propvio checks before giving you a Verified badge. Confirmed jobs then build a public record of the work you have done.

Costs to Plan For

  • An application fee and an annual registration fee.
  • The cost of the qualifications your qualified supervisor needs.
  • Calibrated test instruments, and their regular recalibration.
  • Insurance, which schemes usually ask to see.

Fees and requirements vary between schemes and categories. Check each scheme's current terms before you apply.
