Why Reviews Tied to Real Jobs Matter More Than Star Ratings
Published 13 August 2026 · Propvio Guides
Star ratings are easy to produce and easy to fake. Understanding how a review was created matters as much as the score itself.
The Problem with Anonymous Reviews
On many general directories, anyone can leave a review for a tradesperson, whether or not they carried out any work for them. A rival business, a friend, or a dissatisfied stranger can all leave a rating with equal weight.
Fake or exaggerated reviews are a recognised problem across UK review platforms, and they make it harder for homeowners to judge who is genuinely reliable.
What a Job-Tagged Review Actually Means
On Propvio, a review can only be left once a homeowner has logged a real job and tagged the tradesperson who carried it out. The tradesperson must then confirm the job before it appears on their profile.
This does not mean Propvio checks the factual accuracy of what is written in a log entry. It means the review is tied to a job that both sides have confirmed took place.
Look at the Number of Confirmed Jobs, Not Just the Average
A tradesperson with five confirmed jobs and a 4.8 average rating has a stronger track record than one with a single five-star review and no other activity.
When you compare tradespeople, treat the number of confirmed jobs as at least as important as the star rating itself.
What This Means for Choosing a Tradesperson
Before you hire someone, look for a review history built from real, confirmed jobs rather than a high score alone. Ask how long they have been active and how recently they completed work.
