What to Ask a Tradesperson Before Work Starts

Published 13 August 2026 · Propvio Guides

A short conversation before work starts can prevent most disputes later. These are the questions worth asking, whatever the job.

Ask About Cost and Scope

Ask for a written quote, not just a verbal estimate. It should set out the total cost, what is included, and what would count as extra work.

If the price seems unusually low, ask why. A very low quote can mean lower-quality materials, unqualified labour, or a price that will rise once work has started.

Ask About the Timeline

Confirm a start date and an expected finish date. Ask what could cause a delay, such as waiting for materials or the need for further permissions.

For larger jobs, ask whether the tradesperson is working on other projects at the same time, and how this might affect your finish date.

Ask About Permits and Building Control

Some work, such as structural changes or an extension, needs building control sign-off. Ask who is responsible for arranging this: you, or the tradesperson.

For gas or notifiable electrical work, ask which certificate you should receive once the job is finished, and keep a copy.

Ask What Happens if Something Goes Wrong

Ask what guarantee or warranty applies to the work, and how long it lasts. Get this in writing, not just as a verbal promise.

Confirm the tradesperson holds public liability insurance, and ask what the process is if a dispute arises once the job is complete.
