Lost Your Boiler Installation Certificate? How to Get a Copy

Published 7 October 2026 · Propvio Guides

When a gas boiler is installed, the engineer must notify the work through Gas Safe Register. A certificate is then sent to the homeowner. This guide explains how to replace it if it has gone missing.

The Two Documents That Matter

The Building Regulations compliance certificate proves the installation was notified. The Benchmark checklist records how the boiler was commissioned and serviced.

Buyers' solicitors ask for the first. Boiler manufacturers often ask for the second before honouring a warranty claim.

Replacing the Compliance Certificate

Gas Safe Register can check whether an installation at your address was notified, and can issue a replacement certificate. There is usually a small fee.

You will need the address and, ideally, the approximate installation date. If nothing was notified, ask the original installer why.

Finding the Benchmark Checklist

The Benchmark checklist is usually in the back of the boiler's installation manual, often left near the boiler. Check the cupboard or loft where the boiler is fitted.

Each annual service should be recorded on its service pages. If the book is missing, ask the engineer who services the boiler for copies of their service records.

If the Installation Was Never Notified

An installation that was never notified may still be safe, but there is no record that it was checked. A Gas Safe registered engineer can carry out a safety check and give you a record of it.

For the wider rules on who can work on gas appliances, see Understanding a Gas Safety Certificate.

Keeping Boiler Records Together

A boiler builds up paperwork every year: services, repairs and the original installation. Logging each visit on Propvio keeps the full history in one place.

If your engineer confirms each service, a buyer can see the boiler was looked after by a named, registered person.
