How to Find a Trustworthy Carpenter in the UK

Published 13 August 2026 · Updated 7 October 2026 · Propvio Guides

Carpentry ranges from hanging a door to making bespoke fitted furniture, and the right questions depend on the job. Some carpentry, such as fire doors and stairs, also has to meet building rules. This guide sets out what to check before you hire a carpenter.

BWF, FMB and Examples of Similar Work

Look for membership of a body such as the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) or the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). Membership is not a legal requirement, but it suggests a track record.

For bespoke work, ask to see examples of similar pieces. Quality and style vary a great deal between carpenters.

Lead Times and Materials

Bespoke joinery often takes longer than off-the-shelf fittings, since materials are ordered and made to measure. Ask for a realistic timeframe before you agree a start date.

Agree the exact materials in writing, including the type of wood or board. This has a large effect on both cost and durability.

Fire Doors and Staircases

Some doors must be fire doors, such as the door between an integral garage and the house. Loft conversions also usually need fire doors on the escape route.

A fire door only works if it is fitted correctly, with the right frame, seals and closer. Ask whether the carpenter is certified to fit fire doors, for example under the BM TRADA Q-Mark or FIRAS schemes.

New or altered stairs must meet building rules on steepness, headroom and handrails. Ask how the design will meet them.

Warning Signs When Booking Bespoke Work

  • There are no drawings or measurements for you to approve.
  • They ask for a large deposit without saying what materials it covers.
  • They will not say who is responsible if a piece does not fit.
  • They are vague about whether fire-rated parts are certified.

A Carpenter's Confirmed Jobs

A carpenter's skill is easiest to judge from finished work. On Propvio, a review only appears once a homeowner has logged the job and the carpenter has confirmed it.

Check the type of jobs behind a carpenter's history, such as fitted furniture or structural timber, to see whether it matches what you need.

What a Joinery Quote Should Cover

Ask for a written quote covering materials, labour, finishes and the expected completion date. For bespoke work, attach the agreed drawing.
