Do You Have to Replace Your Gas Boiler? UK Rules Explained

Published 18 September 2026 · Propvio Guides

There is a lot of confusing information online about gas boilers being banned in the UK. This guide gives a simple, factual answer.

Is There a Ban on Gas Boilers?

No. There is no ban on using, repairing, or replacing a gas boiler in an existing UK home. If your boiler breaks, you can still replace it with another gas boiler.

An earlier government plan to phase out gas boilers in existing homes by 2035 has been scrapped. At the time of writing, there is no fixed date requiring existing homeowners to remove a working gas boiler.

What Is Actually Changing

The rule that is changing is called the Future Homes Standard. It applies only to new-build homes, not existing ones, and sets much lower carbon emission limits for new heating systems, in practice meaning technology such as heat pumps rather than a gas boiler.

The final rules were confirmed in March 2026 and take effect for new homes from March 2027. If you are not building a new home, this rule does not apply to your own boiler.

Should You Consider Switching Anyway?

You are not required to switch. Some homeowners choose to move to a heat pump anyway, for lower running costs or lower emissions, and government schemes exist to help with the cost.

See How to Find a Trustworthy Heat Pump or Solar Panel Installer in the UK for what to check before choosing an installer, including the certification that grant schemes require.

Keeping a Record Either Way

Whether you keep your existing boiler or switch to a heat pump, keep a record of who serviced, repaired, or installed it, along with any certificate issued. This protects you now and reassures a buyer later.
